Warning About the High Danger of an Unprecedented Cocktail of Synthetic Drugs
The Toxicology and Forensic Chemistry Laboratory of the Judicial Investigations Corps (CIJ) of the Public Prosecutor's Office of the City recently issued a warning after detecting a mixture of nine substances with stimulant, hallucinogenic, and anesthetic effects in a single drug sample seized in a case investigated by the Specialized Fiscal Unit for the Investigation of Drug-Related Crimes (UFEIDE).
The CIJ's alert, led by Bárbara Moramarco, Secretary of Investigations and Relations with Security Forces of the MPF CABA, was issued due to the great diversity of substances in the same sample with different toxicological actions, which considerably increases the risk of consumption and complicates treatment in the event of poisoning.
The finding from the CIJ's Toxicology and Forensic Chemistry Laboratory has already been reported to the National Security Ministry's Early Warning System and the equivalent system of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), in order to contribute to the monitoring and updating of information regarding the circulation of new psychoactive substances and to warn the public.
It all began with an investigation by UFEIDE, led by prosecutor Cecilia Amil Martin, which detected that a suspect was using a pet shop located in the Boedo neighborhood as a front for drug sales, marketing them both inside the store and through the "hand-to-hand" method to drivers who stopped at the location.
During the raid carried out at the business, as well as at the suspect's residence, 15 sheets containing the dangerous chemical mixture were seized, along with 57.9 grams of ketamine, MDA pills, and those known as "micropoint," LSD sheets, and $3,600 in cash.
Prosecutor Amil Martin ordered the immediate arrest of the accused on charges of aggravated drug trafficking.
It was the forensic analysis of the CIJ that detected that the seized perforated papers contained:
+Brolanfetamine, Dimethoxyamphetamine, Methamphetamine, Methylendioxymethamphetamine, and Methylendioxymethamphetamine: synthetic substances with stimulant effects.
+25-E-NBOH: a synthetic hallucinogen that is not sold in the legal market.
+Ketamine: a synthetic dissociative anesthetic that is legally marketed as ketamine hydrochloride for human and veterinary use.
+Aminopyrine: a synthetic analgesic and anti-inflammatory whose use is prohibited in our country.
+Caffeine: a natural stimulant. It is sold in the legal market for food uses.
CIJ specialists warned that the combination of these substances increases the unpredictability of clinical effects, complicates the estimation of the dose actually consumed, and raises the risk of acute toxicity, which may manifest as cardiovascular events, alterations in states of consciousness, hyperthermia, seizures, and other potentially serious complications.
They also emphasized that the coexistence of stimulants, psychedelics, and dissociative substances on the same medium (blotter) further complicates the clinical interpretation of intoxications and complicates healthcare response strategies.
The Toxicology and Forensic Chemistry Laboratory of the CIJ has extensive experience in issuing early alerts and maintains a strong commitment to the regulatory bodies and systems responsible for updating the lists of substances subject to control in our country, as well as to the protection of the potentially exposed population to the consumption of these substances.
