Gold is money. Everything else is credit. Paolo Ardoino never minces words. On Wednesday, the CEO of Tether summarized his worldview in a formula posted on X: <<*Bitcoin + Gold = hedge against doom*. >> This punchline extends a broader statement made a few weeks earlier, where he presented Bitcoin, gold, and agricultural land as the triptych of protection against << darker times >>. It is no coincidence: these are exactly the three pillars on which Tether has built its treasury. Key points of this article: * Paolo Ardoino stated that Bitcoin, gold, and agricultural land serve as a bulwark against dark times, a strategy adopted by Tether. * Tether has accumulated nearly 99,000 BTC and holds about 148 tons of gold, certified in Switzerland, confirming the strength of its reserves. * The company has invested in agricultural land with an innovative Bitcoin mining farm project in Brazil, leveraging sugarcane energy. Bitcoin: nearly 99,000 BTC accumulated quarter after quarter Indeed, Tether has allocated up to 15% of its quarterly profits to the purchase of Bitcoin for several years. And the move has paid off. The company held 98,933 BTC at the end of the second quarter of 2026, a rise of nearly 1,800 coins over three months. This places Tether among the five largest private holders of Bitcoin in the world, alongside much more public companies in this field. Gold: 148 tons of bars and a KPMG audit at $6.8 billion The gold pillar rests on equally massive figures. Tether holds approximately 148 tons of physical bars, stored in Switzerland and certified by LBMA, with a value nearing $23 billion. These reserves back both USDT and the Tether Gold token (XAUT). Furthermore, an audit conducted by KPMG, published in mid-August, confirmed that the company's total reserves exceeded its commitments by $6.8 billion, marking the first complete validation by a Big Four firm. Land: 580,000 hectares and a sugarcane Bitcoin farm The third pillar is the least known to the public. In 2025, Tether took control of 70% of Adecoagro, an agricultural giant listed on Nasdaq and present in Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay, for $620 million. The company manages over 580,000 hectares of crops, dairy farming, and sugarcane. According to Tether, land remains << a rare resource that offers long-term returns and historically serves as a safe haven in times of geopolitical instability >>. The three pillars are also not isolated. Adecoagro recently announced a Bitcoin mining farm project powered by sugarcane waste in Brazil, literally transforming part of its land into energy to produce more of the first reserve of the triptych. The word << doom >> is also not trivial in Ardoino's mouth. The CEO of Tether has reiterated in recent months that a bubble in artificial intelligence investments represents, in his view, the main risk looming over Bitcoin in 2026. Accumulating BTC, physical gold, and arable hectares, in his logic, is about hedging against the bursting of this bubble in advance rather than reacting afterward.
