$64 Billion Data Center Project Delayed
Prefer us on GoogleA $64 billion project has been blocked or delayed due to backlash surrounding the expansion of AI data centers in the United States. Concerns over power grid burdens, water usage, noise, and land use are hindering the expansion of big tech's AI infrastructure. According to Data Center Watch, projects worth $18 billion have been blocked and $46 billion worth of projects have been delayed from May 2024 to March 2025. New York State will implement a moratorium on hyperscale data centers on July 14, 2026, establishing rules to address power grid burdens, land degradation, noise, and water resource protection for up to a year. A survey revealed that 61% of respondents oppose the construction of data centers near their homes, with opposition rates at 69% among Democrats, 54% among Republicans, and 53% among independents. While data centers are essential infrastructure for AI model training and cloud services, they are perceived by local residents as facilities that increase burdens on the power grid and water resources. The industry has stated that it will work with policymakers to reduce power cost burdens.
