X to Implement 'Gateway' to Cryptocurrency Trading, Possibly Connecting to External Services via Cashtags
Planning Connection to Exchanges and Brokers via Cashtags
X has revealed plans to introduce a new trading button that will allow users to transition to cryptocurrency trading directly from the platform.
According to Nikita Bier, who served as the product lead at X, the company is planning to implement a button that connects users to trading in cryptocurrencies and stocks. This new feature is expected to expand the existing Cashtags, potentially linking users to market information and actual trading through partnered cryptocurrency exchanges and brokers.
Currently, users can check price charts, market information, and related posts for targeted cryptocurrencies and companies through Cashtags on X. If the new trading feature is implemented, users who check this information may be able to proceed to trading through partnered external financial services.
Execution of trades, identity verification, and regulatory compliance may depend on the cryptocurrency exchanges and regulated brokers that X partners with. However, specific details regarding partners, targeted cryptocurrencies and stocks, available countries or regions, and types of accounts have not been disclosed at this time.
X is already widely used for gathering information on the cryptocurrency market, monitoring project trends, and exchanging opinions among investors and traders. With the addition of the trading button, users could streamline the process from information gathering to trading by proceeding directly to orders through external services after checking prices and related information via Cashtags.
For partnered financial service providers, this could create new touchpoints with investors and traders on X. There are also indications that X could earn referral fees or partnership revenue from trades facilitated through the platform, although specific revenue models have not been clarified.
Expansion of Financial Features Following Smart Cashtags
The trading button is positioned as a follow-up feature to the smart cashtags led by Bier.
Smart cashtags utilize cryptocurrency ticker symbols and smart contract addresses to identify targeted assets, displaying real-time prices, charts, and related posts. The service began rolling out for iPhone in April 2026 and has since expanded to the web version.
During his time at X, Bier worked on enhancing these cryptocurrency-related features and also addressed concerns regarding apps that promote low-quality cryptocurrency content generated by AI. In January 2026, he revealed revisions to developer policies that would lead to API access restrictions for such services. After transitioning to an advisor role at X in August 2026, Bier stated that work towards implementing the trading button continues.
However, the timeline for the launch, the cryptocurrencies involved, targeted regions, and specific partnering businesses remain undisclosed, and further announcements will be necessary to clarify the details of the service.
