Sun Zheyuan Fined 485,000 for Profiting 85,000 by Fabricating False Articles on Soda Ash Using AI
The Sichuan Securities Regulatory Bureau has imposed penalties on individual investor Sun Zheyuan. He used AI to generate 17 false articles about soda ash production and published them on Baidu's public account "Dikan." During this period, he traded soda ash futures, earning a profit of 85,028.85 yuan after deducting fees. The regulatory authority confiscated all his earnings and fined him 400,000 yuan, totaling approximately 485,000 yuan in penalties. These 17 articles revolved around two false pieces of information: four claimed that a certain soda ash company's boiler had malfunctioned, causing the production line to halt for at least six months; the other 13 claimed that an earthquake in Alashan had damaged factories. One day after the release of the two batches of articles, they had a combined readership of 8,794, prompting some investors to verify with the listed company and others to report to the regulatory platform. Sun Zheyuan argued that the articles did not cause substantial impact, that his futures profits were unrelated to the false information, and claimed to have long suffered from mental illness. The Sichuan Securities Regulatory Bureau rejected his defense, determining that his subjective intent was evident and that he failed to prove he was unable to recognize or control his actions at the time of the incident. The regulators clarified that profits from futures trading during the dissemination of false information can be directly classified as illegal gains.
