The net profit margin of U.S. S&P 500 companies is projected to reach 15.7% in the second quarter. This would be the highest level since 2009 and could mark the tenth consecutive quarter of increases. So far, about 27% of the companies in the S&P 500 have reported their earnings, and their net profit margin is expected to improve from 14.8% in the first quarter. The net profit margins of S&P 500 companies have been on the rise since the end of 2023, with analyses suggesting that expanded AI investments are boosting both productivity and profitability. During this earnings season, Alphabet, the parent company of Google, reported results significantly exceeding market expectations, contributing to the overall rise in the S&P 500 net profit margin. Among the companies that have reported so far, 86% exceeded the market expectations for earnings per share (EPS), and 80% surpassed revenue forecasts. This indicates that companies' profit-generating capabilities are stronger than anticipated. Wall Street views this earnings season as a crucial test to justify the high valuations of the U.S. stock market.
