HWI Stops Supporting New Devices, BHWI Transition Verification Needed
The Bitcoin hardware wallet interface tool HWI has ceased support for new features and new device acceptance. HWI maintainers have announced that they will no longer accept requests for new features other than MuSig2 support, and new device pull requests have also been halted. HWI stands for Hardware Wallet Interface and is responsible for communication between Bitcoin Core and various hardware signing devices. This decision does not mean that the HWI repository will immediately switch to a storage state, but it is expected that the burden of compatibility with new devices and features will increase. The successor candidate, BHWI, is a Rust-based project aimed at maintaining command output compatibility with HWI. BHWI supports devices such as BitBox02, Coldcard, Jade, and Ledger. Additional verification from the wallet development team is required to complete the transition, which includes confirming compatibility due to new model support and firmware changes. The user experience of hardware wallets may vary depending on the support range of wallet apps and connection tools.
