The European Union has announced a €30 billion funding plan to strengthen its position in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed the ambition to make Europe the leading continent in AI. This project aims to create up to seven AI gigafactories in Europe, thereby increasing the computing capacities dedicated to AI and providing start-ups, SMEs, industries, universities, and public bodies with access to advanced infrastructures. The funding includes €10 billion from the EU and its member states, as well as at least €20 billion in private investments. Despite this initiative, the €30 billion remains lower than the investments planned by other powers, such as China with $295 billion over five years. The European Commission emphasizes that access to sovereign high-capacity infrastructures is crucial for Europe's industrial competitiveness and technological sovereignty.
