Divisions in the Iranian Community Worsen Six Months After U.S.-Israeli Military Strikes on Iran
On August 29, six months have passed since the first round of U.S.-Israeli military strikes against Iran, and the war has had a global impact, leading to a severe division within the Iranian community in the United States. Some anti-Iran government individuals had supported the military action, hoping to push for regime change; others, however, are concerned about civilian casualties and regional instability, opposing external military intervention. Arezo Rashidian, an activist who has long supported Iran's former Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi, stated that many who once supported military action now feel disappointed, believing that the hoped-for regime change has not occurred. As the fighting has calmed, domestic security controls in Iran have tightened, and the public has become more cautious about political discussions and protests. Anti-war activists argue that some Iranian Americans who supported military intervention have unrealistic expectations about the war's outcomes and underestimate the lessons learned from conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Libya. The war has not bridged the political divides among Iranians abroad; instead, it has exacerbated distrust between different generations and political factions. The U.S. continues to strengthen economic pressure on Iran, while Tehran warns of potential further retaliatory measures, and divisions within the Iranian diaspora regarding the war's trajectory and Iran's future continue to widen.
