What is Canton Network($CC)?The Privacy-Enabled “Network of Networks” Powering Institutional Finance
Canton Network is a privacy-enabled Layer 1 blockchain developed by Digital Asset, designed as a “network of networks.” Its mission is to securely and compliantly bring the vast universe of traditional financial assets and transactions—such as repo markets, tokenized bonds, and institutional settlements—onchain, effectively powering Wall Street and the multi-trillion-dollar onchain economy.
Mainstream smart contract platforms face significant challenges in privacy, granular permissions, and enterprise compliance. In institutional and banking contexts, counterparties often need to perform atomic swaps while keeping sensitive details—such as counterparty identities and transaction specifics—private yet auditable by regulators.
Traditional private sidechains cannot achieve this level of rule-based, configurable privacy at scale.
Canton introduces selective visibility and privacy-aware smart contracts, ensuring that each participant only sees what they are authorized to see, while maintaining synchronized global state across the entire Layer 1 and all its sub-networks.
- Interoperability: Atomic by Design
- The true value of blockchain lies not only in connecting networks, but in enabling atomic transaction composition—executing operations across multiple assets and applications as a single, indivisible transaction.Canton achieves this natively across its Layer 1 network, without compromising atomicity or privacy. In contrast, when dealing with regulated assets or currencies, most other blockchains push users toward private subnetworks or privacy-focused Layer 2s to preserve confidentiality—sacrificing atomicity in the process. They rely on message bridges or custom protocols that cannot guarantee synchronized settlement, reintroducing counterparty risk that blockchains were meant to eliminate.
- Scalability: Monolithic vs. Modular Architecture
- Solana has set a high bar for performance with its monolithic architecture, optimizing throughput within a single global chain. However, this approach comes with tradeoffs: all participants compete for the same global bandwidth, leading to scalability bottlenecks.
- Canton, by contrast, employs a modular network architecture. Applications and bandwidth can scale horizontally—each time a new participant or operator launches a subnet, overall capacity increases.
This design combines resource isolation with shared trust and interoperability, giving institutions the scalability they need without losing control over their own environments.
