Want to try cryptocurrency but not sure where to begin? This beginner's guide breaks it into four clear stages — ① choose an exchange → ② open an account and verify → ③ deposit → ④ make your first purchase — and covers the parts newcomers stumble on, including funding methods and wallet storage. It contains no "you'll make money" claims and no price forecasts. Understand the mechanics first, and start with a small amount of spare money.

▶ Ready to start? Create a WEEX account — registration takes a few minutes.

What is cryptocurrency? The basics before you start

Cryptocurrency is a digital asset managed on a blockchain. Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) are the best-known examples; they trade 24/7 and prices move constantly with supply and demand. Unlike a bank deposit, crypto is volatile and has no principal guarantee — which is exactly why it's safest to begin with a small amount while you learn.

Getting started in four steps (the big picture)

    StepWhat you doKey point
① Choose an exchangeCompare and pick a regulated exchangeRegistration, fees, security, app
② Open account + verify (KYC)Register and complete identity verificationID document required. Legally mandatory
③ DepositFund with local currency or a stablecoinBank transfer / instant deposit / card
④ First purchaseBuy a small amount of BTC or ETHBrokerage or order book. Start small

    Step 1: Choosing an exchange

    • Registration: use a regulated exchange in your jurisdiction — check the regulator's list first.
    • Fees: deposit, withdrawal, and trading fees differ by venue.
    • Security: look for features like two-factor authentication.
    • Supported coins and app usability: does it list what you want to buy, and is the app easy to use? See our crypto app selection guide.

Step 2: Open an account and verify (KYC)

Register through the exchange's official site or app, then complete identity verification with a government ID. It's usually done on your phone within a day or so. KYC is legally required — steer clear of any service claiming you can use it "with no verification."

Step 3: How to deposit (bank transfer, card, and more)

    • Bank transfer: the most basic method — send local currency to the designated account.
    • Instant deposit: credited almost in real time via a partner bank or online banking.
    • Credit/debit card: some exchanges let you buy crypto by card. Convenient, but card purchases often carry higher fees — check the amount and fee first.

Crediting time and fees vary by method. A small test deposit to confirm the flow is a safe habit before funding the full amount.

Step 4: Your first purchase (start small)

Most exchanges let you buy from a small amount. You can buy in one tap on a brokerage (simple, but a wider spread) or set a price on the order-book exchange (lower fees, a little more to learn). For a detailed Bitcoin walkthrough, see our how to buy Bitcoin guide.

    Storing your crypto (wallets)

Keep it on the exchange, or move it to a self-custody wallet you control. For long-term holding or DeFi, a self-custody wallet is an option — but if you lose the secret recovery phrase, the funds cannot be recovered. See What is MetaMask? A complete guide.

Going a step further: the basics of futures and leverage (understand the risk)

Once you're comfortable with spot, futures (leveraged) trading is another option. WEEX, a cryptocurrency exchange, centers on futures (USDT-margined perpetuals) alongside spot and copy trading. But futures are a derivative that tracks price — you don't hold the coin itself, and leverage amplifies losses. This is not something to jump into as a beginner; if you do explore it, practice first on demo trading (USDT-M futures) with virtual funds.

Next step: buy crypto on WEEX / download the WEEX app (official source).

    FAQ

Can a beginner really start with crypto?

Yes. Most exchanges let you open an account on your phone and buy a small amount. Learn the mechanics and start with spare money you can afford to lose, keeping the high volatility in mind.

How little do I need to start?

It varies by exchange, but you can often start from a very small amount. Begin with a sum you're comfortable with.

    What deposit methods are there?

Mainly bank transfer, instant deposit, and credit card (support varies by exchange). Crediting time and fees differ, so check in advance.

Can I buy crypto with a credit card?

Some exchanges support card purchases. It's convenient, but fees are often higher — check the amount and fee before using it.

    Is identity verification (KYC) required?

Yes. A regulated exchange must verify your identity by law. Avoid services that claim you can skip it.

This content is for information only and is not investment advice. Cryptocurrency is volatile and your principal is not guaranteed. Futures and leveraged products are derivatives designed to track price; they are not the coin itself, and leverage amplifies losses. Fees and specifications are as of July 2026 and may change.
