How much energy, housing, land, corporate equity, or human labor time can one Bitcoin exchange for?

    Written by: Dave Birnbaum, Forbes
    Compiled by: AididiaoJP, Foresight News

Bitcoin has entered the realm of trillion-dollar assets. However, the meaning of this "trillion" is worth exploring.

In today's society, a trillion-dollar debt scale is no longer uncommon. However, this week, the U.S. federal debt surpassed $40 trillion, which is still alarming. If we calculate at a rate of $1 spent per second, it would take about 1.27 million years to exhaust this amount.

Economist Peter C. Earle points out that we have entered "Trillionistan"—a number that once belonged solely to the field of astronomy now frequently appears in financial headlines. Currently, there are at least a dozen publicly traded companies in the U.S. valued at over $1 trillion; the investment scale for building artificial intelligence infrastructure is often in the trillions even before land is requisitioned.

Bitcoin is also among them. As of the time of writing, approximately 21 million Bitcoins are in circulation, priced at around $77,355 each, with a total market value close to $1.54 trillion. This figure seems astonishing. How can a digital asset carry such a high price tag?

Bitcoin's trillion-dollar market value is built upon three forces: the actual growth of its monetary network, market expectations for its future applications, and the depreciation of the dollar used for pricing.

The supply side of Bitcoin has a high degree of regulatory certainty—its issuance schedule is public and transparent, making it difficult to be influenced by political factors; however, its price is continuously affected by the attributes of fiat currency. Therefore, to understand Bitcoin's value, it is more essential to ask a question that is more fundamental than "how high can the price go": what kind of "trillion" is being priced by the market?

Trillions abound, each with its own meaning

In 1901, J.P. Morgan established U.S. Steel as the world's first company to surpass a market value of $1 billion. At that time, this figure shocked all sectors, and the company became a symbolic representation of industrial strength and financial concentration.

In the past decade, startups valued at over $1 billion have been dubbed "unicorns"; today, such companies are ubiquitous in the market, and perhaps it would be more fitting to call them "workhorses." High valuations are becoming increasingly common, partly due to improvements in productivity and efficiency, but more importantly, due to the continuous decline in the purchasing power of the dollar used to measure corporate value.

Earle made a revealing distinction: the trillions created through entrepreneurship and discovery are fundamentally different from those generated through monetary expansion and debt accumulation. Most large economic figures simultaneously contain dual components—a tech company may serve billions of users and generate substantial profits, while also being driven by abundant liquidity that encourages investors to buy its stock, causing its valuation to grow far beyond its fundamentals; a government can incur trillions in debt to build infrastructure with productive utility (the rationality of which is questionable, as it lacks market signals to guide resource allocation) or use debt to delay the release of financial risks.

As the scale of numbers increases, this distinction becomes increasingly important. When the measuring unit itself continues to shrink, setting price records becomes easier. Over the past century, the U.S. money supply has expanded from billions to trillions. The same property, the same company, the same ounce of gold, even if its actual utility has not increased, can still command a higher dollar price. In other words, prices carry effective information about the optimal use of assets while also mixing in the effects of changes in the measuring unit itself. One of the core responsibilities of financial professionals is to strive to clarify the distinction between the two through in-depth research and modeling.

Bitcoin introduces a unique variable to this issue. Its quantity is defined by a fixed rule protocol, while its value is typically expressed in currency influenced by policy and credit conditions. One side of the ratio (supply) is predictable, while the other side (demand) fluctuates with interest rates, market liquidity, and political factors.

The Actual Meaning of Bitcoin's Market Value

The market value is calculated as the latest transaction price multiplied by the circulating supply. However, Bitcoin's current market value of about $1.5 trillion does not mean that investors have deposited $1.3 trillion of existing capital into Bitcoin. The actual pricing is determined by the marginal latest transactions between buyers and sellers, and it is assumed to apply to every unit in circulation.

Thus, a relatively small transaction can reprice a large asset stock. Market value reflects the value that the market currently assigns to the entire supply, but it hardly explains the scale of funds required to create that valuation, nor can it determine its sustainability.

Bitcoin's price can also easily lead to misunderstandings of "unit bias." When people see a five-digit high price, they may feel a sense of missing out, as if Bitcoin must be purchased in whole units, just like stocks. In fact, each Bitcoin can be subdivided into 100 million units, called "satoshis." The protocol can display the total supply as 21 million trillion smaller units, and the network's scarcity is not affected at all. A Bitcoin priced at $75,000 and a satoshi priced at $0.00075 have the same purchasing power expressed in the dollar pricing system.

Compared to unit price, a market value exceeding a trillion has informational value, as it describes the value that the market assigns to the entire network. However, even this number needs to be viewed in a specific context. In 2024, when Bitcoin's market value was about $1.3 trillion, I pointed out that its financial infrastructure and institutional ownership were reshaping the public market. Two years later, today, custodial services, ETFs, corporate adoption, and sovereign interest continue to grow, while nominal valuations have roughly returned to similar levels. Prices may linger in place, while the assets themselves have undergone profound changes.

The Three Constituent Elements of Bitcoin's Trillion-Dollar Valuation

The first element is currency dilution. When governments increase the issuance of currency and credit, scarce assets often become the outlet for absorbing incremental liquidity. Stocks, real estate, art, gold, and Bitcoin all serve as reservoirs for people trying to preserve purchasing power. Therefore, the rise in Bitcoin's price can reflect both an increase in demand for that asset and a weakening of the dollar, or both.

The second element is particularly noteworthy—especially for observers who have yet to understand the foundational value of Bitcoin—namely its network utility. Bitcoin can transfer value globally without going through any banks or intermediaries; it provides a final settlement mechanism without an issuer; and it allows any participant to verify its supply. Miners expend energy to maintain a Bitcoin ledger that is shared and publicly visible to all, while individuals running "nodes" (small computer programs) are responsible for enforcing network rules. Bitcoin can be viewed as a financial service provider, even though it does not rely on any single institution or intermediary. A currency network creates value through liquidity, credibility, settlement capability, and the number of entities (including people and agents) willing to accept it as a means of payment.

The third element is the capitalization of future currency demand—critics may call it speculation, but its essence is the logic of investment operations. Investors today buy Bitcoin based on expectations of more individuals, companies, funds, and governments holding it in the future. In this sense, Bitcoin's market value is similar to the valuation of a growing network. It reflects the demand for scarce monetary goods but does not grant any claim to future corporate profits. This makes it difficult for traditional investors to understand, as they typically believe that asset prices can be estimated by discounting future cash flows to the present. This is precisely the characteristic of Bitcoin as an emerging asset class—it is more akin to currency and commodities than to stocks.

This also explains why Bitcoin is often seen as "digital gold." The value of gold primarily stems from a long-accumulated consensus—that it can preserve wealth across time and political systems. Bitcoin is vying for a portion of this monetary premium, but compared to gold, its advantages lie in being more easily divisible, more easily verifiable, quicker to transfer, and lower in cost. Gold still enjoys deeper institutional trust and a larger base of sovereign buyers, which also helps explain why gold can rise while Bitcoin may stagnate. Even if the long-term monetary argument remains valid, different marginal buyers can also create entirely different price trends.

Energy Transformed into a Monetary Network

Bitcoin also belongs to a larger narrative about energy within the "Trillionistan" framework. Bitcoin miners convert electricity and dedicated computing power into network security in exchange for newly issued Bitcoins and transaction fees. Since Bitcoin mining facilities can operate near remote power generation facilities and reduce consumption when electricity is needed elsewhere, they can monetize stranded, intermittent, or hard-to-transport energy.

This process bears similarities to the current construction of AI infrastructure. In fact, under the increasingly stringent regulatory environment for new data centers, many data centers are located within or near Bitcoin mining facilities. Just as Bitcoin converts electricity into security, data centers convert electricity into intelligence. The upcoming robotic revolution will convert electricity into physical labor. Each type of system opens new economic pathways for energy, a point I discussed in my article "Bitcoin, AI, and the Four Forces Shaping the New Economy." Electricity has long been the cornerstone of economic value, and the AI-driven economy finally makes it more perceptible. Bitcoin is also based on the ability to produce and consume energy, thus aligning closely with this new era.

    Towards the Path of "Deca-Trillionistan"

A Bitcoin with a market value of a deca-trillion today sounds quite absurd. Assuming a circulating supply of 20 million, it would mean each Bitcoin is priced at about $50 million. However, this figure itself hardly explains what form the world must evolve into to support such pricing.

If the dollar roughly maintains its current purchasing power, a deca-trillion valuation would mean Bitcoin absorbs a considerable proportion of global capital (this scenario is not unimaginable). On the other hand, severe inflation could also produce the same nominal milestone, while Bitcoin's actual purchasing power would be far below what supporters envision. The fact that Japan's government debt surpassed 1 quadrillion yen in 2013 proves that a large number, if lacking a monetary context, reveals very limited information.

A better measure should focus on how much energy, housing, land, corporate equity, or human labor time one Bitcoin can exchange for; it should also examine the network's share in global savings, settlement volume, liquidity, and ownership.

Bitcoin's current trillion-dollar market value partly stems from productive achievements, partly reflects bets on future applications, and partly results from changes in the currency used for pricing. Unlike other assets, Bitcoin's protocol makes it easier to separate these components, as its own supply schedule is public and transparent. Whether Bitcoin's market value reaches $10 trillion or $100 trillion, the core question remains unchanged: how much has the network grown, and how much has the measuring stick shrunk?
