Shipping Costs Reach Historic Highs
The cost of transporting goods through key chokepoints in global maritime logistics has surged to record levels over the past month due to military conflicts and droughts in Europe and Latin America. Prices on routes through the Panama Canal, the Rhine River, and the Red and Black Seas have hit historical highs, raising concerns about rising consumer prices and the vulnerability of global supply chains. The crisis in the Middle East has effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, forcing vessels to alter their routes. Long-term charter rates for tankers are nearing records set in the summer of 2008. Rates for transporting oil from the Persian Gulf to Asia have reached $15.22 per barrel, the highest level since 2005. The Black Sea has also seen record rates for tankers heading to the Mediterranean. Water levels in the Rhine have critically dropped, leading to the highest barge transport rates since 2012. Prices for passage through the Panama Canal have soared to a record $1.1 million and $2.5 million per slot, depending on the size of the vessel. Average spot rates from the Far East to the U.S. East Coast have increased by 234% compared to last year, reaching $10,249 per container. Experts warn of the long-term consequences of the crisis for consumers.
