The uncertain prospects for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the ongoing tensions in the Middle East have supported rising prices for both WTI and Brent crude oil. Iran has set conditions before agreeing to a full reopening of the strait, including the end of the U.S. maritime blockade, the withdrawal of U.S. troops from around Iran, compensation for recent conflict losses, the lifting of sanctions, and the unconditional release of Iranian assets. These demands have reduced the likelihood of a swift return to normal shipping operations and maintained a risk premium in WTI prices. Negotiations with Oman to establish a secure shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz appear to have made progress, but no agreement has been reached on a full reopening, leading investors to remain cautious about the risks of prolonged disruptions to oil supply. Regional tensions also include drone attacks by Iran-backed Houthi forces on Saudi Aramco's refineries, further exacerbating market concerns over the security of regional oil supplies.
