Introduction of Machine-Readable Watermark in Anthropic Claude Model

Anthropic has begun adding an invisible machine-readable watermark to the generated text of its Claude model. This measure aims to trace the origin of AI-generated content and will be applied to Claude models released in the European Union (EU) after August 2, 2026. The generated text will include an embedded watermark, and supported files will carry source metadata in a digital signature format. The scope of application includes the Claude platform API, Claude, Claude Code, Claude CoWork, and Claude Tag. Anthropic explained that this method does not simply attach an 'AI-generated' label on the screen, but instead embeds a signal within the output produced by the model, ensuring that some markings remain even after copying. C2PA-based source metadata will be applied to the files, which is a public technical standard for recording the origin and modification history of digital content. However, according to official documents, the target of application is 'the output of supported latest Claude models,' with marking support being added for older models. The European Commission has stated that the transparency obligation under Article 50 of the AI Act will take effect from August 2, 2026. The introduction of the watermark by Anthropic is interpreted as a response to this regulatory environment. The technical method has not yet been disclosed, and Anthropic plans to release technical documentation in the future. Some technical stakeholders have expressed concerns regarding copyright and output quality issues.
