The Honam semiconductor industrial complex is being established on the site of the Gwangju military airport, but stable power and water infrastructure are essential to achieve the mass production goal by 2030. The government decided on the site development on July 6, and Chief Presidential Secretary Kang Hoon-sik stated that securing a site of 2.5 million pyeong is possible. Semiconductor manufacturing facilities require a stable supply of electricity and industrial water, and the Ministry of Climate Energy and Environment discussed power supply plans with Korea Electric Power Corporation on July 8. New supply lines connecting the KEPCO public network and the industrial complex are being considered to be built by 2030, with plans to complete the first phase of the supply line by the end of 2029. Securing water supply is also a critical task, requiring a daily supply of 650,000 tons. The government plans to meet this demand by utilizing existing water sources from Dongbok Dam and Jueam Dam, as well as recycled wastewater. The schedule for relocating military facilities is expected to be completed by 2028, with plans to finalize the industrial complex design and planning by 2027 and complete the first semiconductor fab by 2029. The Honam semiconductor industrial complex is an important project to expand domestic semiconductor production bases, and the success of this project will be critically influenced by the provision of power and water supply.
