Attackers are exploiting a vulnerability in Apple's macOS Screen Sharing feature to gain control of Macs and install cryptocurrency miners, according to the Netherlands' national cyber agency. The Dutch National Cyber Security Center (NCSC) reported active exploitation on systems with port 5900 exposed to the internet. Attackers gained root access and installed a Monero mining program, utilizing the victim's hardware. Monero is a privacy coin that is difficult to trace. The agency noted that public proof-of-concept code for the flaw is circulating, increasing the risk of further attacks. The vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2026-65400 and rated 7.1 out of 10 in severity, is an authentication flaw that allows network-based attackers to bypass valid credentials during the login process. Apple has patched the issue in macOS Sequoia 15.7.9, Sonoma 14.8.9, and Tahoe 26.6.1. Users who have not updated, especially those with Screen Sharing accessible from the internet, remain at risk. Monero is commonly used in cryptojacking, where hijacked machines mine cryptocurrency for attackers, leaving victims with electricity costs and degraded performance. The NCSC advises users to apply updates promptly and restrict Screen Sharing access from the internet.
