The Ethereum (ETH) Glamsterdam upgrade includes an additional 183,600 gas for transferring Ether to new addresses. Transfers to existing addresses will maintain the cost of 21,000 gas, but transactions to a new address that has never been used will require additional gas. Ethereum developers will need to modify the software of wallet providers and related services. Glamsterdam is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026 and will adjust the state creation cost when creating new accounts. Transactions to existing addresses will only adjust the balance, while transactions to new addresses will create new account records that need to be stored. The EIP-2780 document proposed dividing the existing 21,000 gas into 12,000 for sender processing costs, 3,000 for recipient access costs, and 6,000 for value transfer costs. An additional 183,600 gas will be required for transfers to addresses without recipients. This change will affect wallet providers, exchanges, and block explorer operators, and if the fee calculator assumes incorrect gas values, it may lead to transaction failures. In addition to fee adjustments, Glamsterdam aims to restructure layer 1 processing, increase block capacity, and prevent database bloat. This upgrade is set to be activated on the Platoberg testnet on the 20th.
