Ethereum Gas Readjustment Requires Review of L1 Smart Contracts

As Ethereum (ETH) approaches its upcoming upgrade, Glamsterdam, the need to review certain L1 smart contracts and gas estimation tools has increased. The Ethereum Foundation announced on the 24th that the gas price adjustments included in Glamsterdam could potentially disrupt some L1 smart contracts or lead to performance degradation. It explained that, based on past mainnet transactions re-executed with the new pricing, only a few contracts fell within the impact zone, while the majority remained unaffected. The Foundation noted that many of the identified issues could be resolved by increasing gas limits. However, contracts and tools designed with fixed gas prices in mind require testing before being applied on the mainnet. The key aspects of this adjustment are EIP-8037 and EIP-8038. EIP-8037 proposes to readjust the costs for new accounts and storage slots, while EIP-8038 adjusts the gas costs for operations that read or update existing states. The Foundation stated that gas prices related to state have not changed significantly since the Berlin fork in 2021. The practical impact will be more concentrated on wallet, RPC, node, indexer, and dApp developers rather than general users. Gas estimation tools are also under review, and wallet and RPC infrastructure operators need to ensure they reflect the new cost rules. The Ethereum Foundation has provided tools and testnets to help identify potentially affected contracts. This matter also follows previous compatibility warnings. Community reactions are mixed, with some evaluating that state cost adjustments are necessary for long-term L1 scalability, while concerns have been raised that complexity could increase costs. The official Ethereum roadmap schedules the Glamsterdam upgrade for Q4 2026.
