Coincheck Completes Registration for Electronic Payment Services, Becomes Second Company in Japan
Coincheck, Inc. announced on the 27th that it has completed the registration for electronic payment services, which is necessary for handling stablecoins. The registration number is 00002 from the Kanto Local Finance Bureau, making it the second company to register in Japan.
The first registration, number 00001, was completed by SBI VC Trade, Inc. on March 4, 2025, which reported handling USDC and RLUSD. Coincheck is now the second company to register following SBI VC Trade.
In February 2024, Coincheck announced a partnership with Circle to expand access to USDC, and has been working towards utilizing stablecoins in Japan. Following this registration completion, the company plans to sequentially start business development in the stablecoin and on-chain finance sectors.
Coincheck has been operating its cryptocurrency trading service "Coincheck" under the license for cryptocurrency exchange business (00014 from the Kanto Local Finance Bureau). The newly acquired electronic payment services license is a separate license for handling stablecoins, which are digital assets that are pegged to fiat currencies and have a different legal status from cryptocurrencies.
With a history of partnering with Circle to expand access to USDC in Japan, the completion of this registration will allow Coincheck to sequentially start providing on-chain financial services that incorporate stablecoins, in addition to its existing services.
Stablecoins are digital assets that provide price stability linked to fiat currencies and are expected to serve as a fast and low-cost means of remittance and payment available 24/7. Their use is expanding, particularly in the payment sector, both domestically and internationally, and traditional financial institutions such as banks are increasingly considering entering the stablecoin-related business.
According to the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, on June 9, 2026, three major banks will establish a council to discuss the joint issuance of stablecoins within the fiscal year 2026. The movement surrounding stablecoins is accelerating across the industry, including traditional financial institutions.
