Circle Gateway Supports Smart Account Deposits and Limits EOA Signatures
Circle Gateway now supports deposits of USD Coin (USDC) into smart contract accounts. However, only external owned account (EOA) signatures are permitted for immediate transfers, with functionality applied in a differentiated manner. The gateway natively supports ERC-1271, allowing smart contract wallets to manage USDC balances without a separate delegated account. The applicable networks include Ethereum (ETH), Base, Arbitrum (ARB), and Avalanche (AVAX). ERC-1271 is an Ethereum standard that enables smart contracts to verify the validity of signatures. Circle Gateway is designed as a cross-chain infrastructure that allows users to utilize USDC scattered across multiple chains as a unified balance. Users can deposit USDC into a non-custodial gateway wallet on the supported chains and mint USDC with a single API call in less than 500 milliseconds. Circle plans to introduce the gateway as a mainnet product available on Arbitrum, Avalanche, Base, and Ethereum by August 2025. Circle's official contract interface documentation states that the depositWithPermit method, an extension of EIP-7597, allows deposits from smart contract accounts, indicating an expansion of compatibility between deposit and permission flows. However, the burn intent signature only accepts EOA signatures, and EIP-1271 signatures are not supported. This change is a technical update focused on enhancing developer experience and account abstraction compatibility, which is expected to broaden the scope of directly handling USDC infrastructure for smart contract wallets.
