Blockstream Validates Existing Hardware Wallets for Quantum-Resistant Signature Schemes

Blockstream has stated that existing hardware wallets can implement hash-based quantum cryptography. The research team tested five hash signature schemes—SLH-DSA, SPHINCS+, UXMSS (SHRINCS-B/L), and XMSS—on four mainstream hardware wallets: Jade, Trezor, Ledger, and BitBox02. The results showed that all tested devices were able to complete signature generation. The SLH-DSA signature took approximately 53 to 120 seconds, while SPHINCS+ (2^40 version) was slightly faster. UXMSS (SHRINCS-B) took 22 to 42 seconds; UXMSS (SHRINCS-L) took longer due to the use of overgrinding technology, taking 226 to 573 seconds, but without this technology, it only took a little over 3 seconds. XMSS took 58 to 118 seconds in cold start mode but could be significantly accelerated through caching mechanisms. This test focused solely on hash-based signature generation and did not involve firmware verification, lattice cryptography, or other quantum-resistant schemes. Future work will explore engineering issues such as cache optimization.
