Bitstamp will automatically reject crypto deposits exceeding 1000 euros from third-party self-custody wallets starting Aug. 18. The new rule specifically targets wallets not owned by the Bitstamp account holder, while deposits from other exchanges will remain unaffected. Customers moving assets from their own self-custody wallets are not subject to a blanket block. Reports indicate that some users received notifications about this change, but Bitstamp has not publicly confirmed the notice. The exchange's API outlines how deposits are classified by origin, with third-party wallets requiring a VASP identifier. Various verification methods are available to distinguish customer-controlled wallets from third-party ones, but the API does not clarify how verified addresses will be treated under the new rule. Rejected deposits do not reverse blockchain transfers automatically; customers must contact support to retrieve their assets. EU Regulation 2023/1113 mandates that crypto-asset service providers assess ownership of self-hosted addresses for transfers over 1000 euros, allowing for risk-based responses. The regulation does not prohibit self-custody or require automatic rejection of all deposits over the threshold.
